In the old times many foreign tourists used to arrive to Petersburg by their own yachts. They always moored on the Neva at the Nikolaevsky Bridge. In the same place, between the drawbridge, Nicholas the Miraculous Chapel used to be situated. Unfortunately, the chapel did not live up till the present time, and the bridge now carries a different name - Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge. But the past has not left for good. Historical places come back, although not always to the same places and the same architectural objects. Now, on the Neva bank, near the Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge, next to Assumption Farmstead of Optina Desert Monastery, there is a quiet, small and cozy café. It is called 'Nikolaevskaya Trapeza' (Nicholas' Meal) in the honor of one of the most esteemed Saints in Russia. The name of the institution perfectly reflects both its style, and concept.
People come to 'Nikolaevskaya Trapeza' to have a rest from the worldly vanity, to enjoy the silence and calmness, and, certainly, to have a meal for the good of their souls.
There are three halls in the café. They are small, but cozy. Their interiors are classic, simple, with no special luxuries. It is good for kind and long conversations in a cold Petersburg weather. Dropping by for a minute you do not feel like leaving, as the atmosphere here is blessed, cordial and hospitable.
The meals here are excellent and made under ancient recipes. Here, you can always taste original Russian dishes and forgotten ancient food cooked according to the orthodox calendar. On the menu are borsch, kasha, pelmeni, blini, pies, kulebyaka, rybnik, newly-baked bread, kvass, sbiten, and berry mors. There is also menu of the day – vegetable, lenten, fish – something new every day, so you will hardly ever be fed up with monotonous meals. In 'Nikolaevskaya Trapeza' they also cook author's dishes: pike cutlets with salmon, sturgeon pelmeni, marinated salmon, and many other things.
In case all those things are no good for you, order dishes to go. For special occasions are roast pig, stuffed sturgeon, or appetizing karavay loaf.
Café 'Nikolaevskaya Trapeza' is a good place for all family. Come and have meal!
